BURN PERMITS

Fire Pits are allowed in the City of Greenville when used to burn wood. We do require that you obtain a burn permit from Public Safety. Ordinance Sited: Section 20-01

Fire Pits are not to be used for burning yard waste (grass and leaves) or garbage. Ordinance Sited: Section 32-26

To obtain a burn permit please be at home, with your fire pit in the place you intend to use it, and then call Central Dispatch at 989-831-5253 and they will dispatch the next available Public Safety Officer or Firefighter.

Burning conditions are evaluated at 7AM and 7PM each day. Please call Central Dispatch at 989-831-5253 to ensure burning is permitted before you burn.

Burn Permits are free and good for one year from date of issue. If a burn is reported and you do not have a permit or you are burning yard waste/garbage Public Safety has the right to extinguish the fire with the fire hose. Damage to your yard due to the water from the fire hose will be your responsibility.  A citation can also be issued.
